Akron Petland closes and employee faces cruelty charges after photo of drowned rabbits appears on Facebook!

AKRON — The Akron Petland store was shut down Wednesday by the chain's corporate office after a photograph was posted on Facebook that showed an employee holding dead rabbits.
Under the photo, Liz Carlisle, 20, of Ravenna, boasts to her friends that she drowned the rabbits because they were injured. She said in the entry that the store's manager took the photograph.
Carlisle is charged with two counts of cruelty to animals pressed by the Humane Society of Greater Akron. She is to appear on Aug. 17 in Akron Municipal Court.
Petland officials said they terminated the owner's franchise agreement because of the "horrific mistreatment of rabbits at the Petland store in Akron."
"Petland will in no way, shape or form tolerate any abuse of animals in its care," company officials said in a news release. "We are outraged of this gross violation of Petland's animal care standards." (really Petland has animal care standards.. they don't seem to care when puppies die.. UGH I hate Petland I hope the all close!)
Investigators said Carlisle posted the photograph on her Facebook page on July 28, and in the post she tells her friends she had to drown the rabbits because they injured each other while fighting.
Petland officials said company policy bars employees from euthanizing any animal. (euthanizing and drowning are two different things **insert bad word** they probably drown them so they don't have to pay money to put them down or treat them. I wonder how many puppies to they kill this way.)
The animals in the Akron store were moved to another Petland.
Carlisle's father, Joe Carlisle, described his daughter as a well-behaved, respectful young woman who has done well in school and is working to pay her way through college. (really well get a real job were you don't sell animals like merchandise.. can you tell I am in a mood about this?)
"She is a good, good person who is innocent totally as a human being of any and all wrongdoing," he said. "She is being unfairly maligned." (she was holding DEAD rabbits in a picture??? Um.. is anyone else confused?)

Some people disgust me. Why would you even work at a pet store if you would KILL an animal. This is rediculas. I dont think the petstores should CLOSE, I think they need to fire everyone and start over fresh. I bought a dog from PetLand & he is perfectly healthy, yet at the same time my sister got a dog from petland & it was sick and had to be taken back.. they gave her another dog which also turned out to be sick. There needs to be someone keeping track of every store, making sure bullshit like this DOESNT happen. PEOPLE are the problem.. not the stores.
Annonymous - I am sorry to say you are WRONG! Pet Store like Pet Land are the problem. your dog came from a puppy mill that does nothing more then bread miseary. Pet Land kills animals all the time it is that most of the employees are stupid enough to put it on Facebook where they get caught.
Shut down Pet Stores get rid of Puppy Mills. Shut down Puppy Mills get rid of sick dieing animals!
Sad thing is about your sisters dog that was sick. IT is DEAD! Left to suffer and die and throw in the dumpster!
1) This young woman was directed by her superiors to do what she did.
2) They were rabbits, not people. Why is it that those who are so passionate about animal rights tend to be pro-abortion (and with our new national healthcare program, pro-infanticide as well?)? Do you care as much when children are abused as when you see or hear of an animal being harmed?
3) Again, the kid is young. Too many people, with far too many crimes, jump on a screaming rampage about retrobution filled with hate and unforgiveness, worthy of the salem witch trials and totally devoid of a fair understanding of human flaws. People make mistakes. People do impulsive things they later regret. She ought to at least be given the opportunty to explain herself before you go to hang her! Too many folks are treating her like some perminate life-long criminal offender, they ought to back off and remember that it may be them being held up for ridicule and attack at some time in the future. Don't believe me? Consider that with so many laws on the books, a case can be made that *everybody* is breaking some, even if they don't know it. I kid you not.
Do I believe in abortion NO I DON'T SO FU! I don't really appreciate you saying anything about abortion. My husband was adopted, his mom could have choose and considered abortion. I am the youngest of 6 children and my mom was 44 years old when she was pregnant with me and was told BY HER DOCTOR! to have an abortion. SO FU! Don't you dare ever bring that up here again. This is a blog about dog rescue not abortion.
Yes, I do get equally upset about the abuse children receive! You don't know me so don't make assumptions about someone you don't know.
There is a HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE difference between people and animals. PEOPLE CAN SAY WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM.
I have done plenty of things I have regretted but none of them involved hurting another living creature.. human or animal. And news flash if you can hurt an animal you can hurt a humane... ALL serial killers started killing animals before moving to humans!
I am glad that Pet Land is shut down, one less place selling puppy mill dogs. I hope that this girl and EVERYONE involved is punished
Oh and if Pet Land is SO AWESOME! Please read Wednesday Aug 12th post.
Wow, Anonymous #1 is an absolute IDIOT! "PEOPLE are the problem.. not the stores." Ok, who runs the store then? Huh?
It is amazing how oblivious so many people are to things happening around us. Puppy mills aren't a few and far between problem. They are a real, terrible and BIG problem.
It's great how Anonymous #1 also thinks that animal lovers can't be compassionate for other human beings. BULL S##T! People who care for anyone other than themselves are rare these days. It doesn't just stop at an animal. These people are passionate about all aspects of life and they value every breath animal or human take.
How rude, judgmental and wrong can one person be??
For One if you feel so strongly about what you are posting then use your name dont hide behind the cloak of anonymity. This blog is about dog rescue not abortion so it was in poor taste and ill manners that you posted it here. Whether or not these were "just rabbits" and she was told what to do by her supervisor or not she still has a brain and she could have said NO. She didnt, she did it then posted photos and bragged about it. Pets stores like Petland get all of their dogs from Puppymills so YES they are the problem and you are part of the problem for purchasing a puppy mill dog! DUH! Become part of the solution not part of the problem.

great link but that has nothing to do with my point on this post! My whole point to my post is I HATE PETLAND! Petland does not take care of sick, injured or dieing animals. They are merchandise and if merchandise is "bad" you throw it away. A life is not MERCHANDISE! The girl is an idiot for many reasons.. #1. get a back bone. #2. she killed rabbits by drowning them.. but probably did it to puppies as well. #3. she bragged about it. Now that takes one sick person. It is one thing to be told to do something, doing it and feeling bad about it. She OBVIOUSLY did not feel bad.
What is funny about this entire thing.. I had a job shortly after college. My boss told me to lie to someone in order to close a sale. I put the customer on hold, handed him the phone and said "NO. I WILL NOT LIE TO THIS PERSON. YOU DO IT!" He could have easily fired me. I worked there for 14 months before giving my notice. So, don't tell me that people can't stand up for themselves.
Just another example of how society lets people get away with murder! I grew up where I was told to treat people how you would like to be treated, respect life and if you do wrong and get caught take your punishment! And I am not that old that people can say "that was the old days"
PETA Killed 95 Percent of Adoptable Pets in its Care During 2008
Hypocritical Animal Rights Group’s 2008 Disclosures Bring Pet Death Toll To 21,339
WASHINGTON DC – Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the animal rights group kills an average of 5.8 pets every day at its Norfolk, VA headquarters.
According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers.
Despite having a $32 million budget, PETA does not operate an adoption shelter. PETA employees make no discernible effort to find homes for the thousands of pets they kill every year. Last year, the Center for Consumer Freedom petitioned Virginia’s State Veterinarian to reclassify PETA as a slaughterhouse.
CCF Research Director David Martosko said: “PETA hasn’t slowed down its hypocritical killing machine one bit, but it keeps browbeating the rest of society with a phony ‘animal rights’ message. What about the rights of the thousands of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens that die in PETA’s headquarters building?”
Martosko added: “Since killing pets is A-OK with PETA, why should anyone listen to their demands about eating meat, using lab rats for medical research, or taking children to the circus?”
CCF obtained PETA’s “Animal Record” filings since 1998 from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Members of the public can see these documents at PetaKillsAnimals.com.

In addition to exposing PETA’s hypocritical record of killing defenseless animals, the Center for Consumer Freedom has publicized the animal rights group’s ties to violent activists, and shed light on its aggressive message-marketing to children.
The Center for Consumer Freedom is a nonprofit coalition supported by restaurants, food companies, and consumers, working together to promote personal responsibility and protect consumer choices.

I am not sure what PETA has to do with me or this post. But I don't like PETA either. You can harp on them all you want Anonymous.. I will agree with you. I hat PETA too!
this article doesn't surprise me about PETA.
Rescuer, I'm pleased to hear that your views of PETA are consistant with the values you apply to petland. Must admit, I was unawair of "puppy mills" and the other petland issues you raised; they are troubling. Thank you for bringing them to my attention.
I should have said "many" as opposed to implying all or even most animal rights activists when I made the abortion comparision. I had an unpleasent run-in with some PETA nuts that were for whatever reason haters of pro-life folks a few years back and it made a strong impression on me.
I would argue its a valid component of the overall question, because its not they can describe what happend to them either~~~
~~~your mom sounds like a great lady :-) My aunt had an identical situation, same decision, healthy child~~~
In regards to the post by "Thoughts," suffice it to say, "are we all not God's creatures?" Your hostility to this valid comparison is unreasonable.
As far as this case is concerned, I agree that the emphisis should be on petland and the context. I disagree that because this kid put down two rabbits after being told to do so, we can assume she would abuse or kill dogs or cats or whatever; that would be a severe escalation to say the least. I reiterate that she's only 20, made a mistake, and does not deserve hate or severe punishment. This is an event that hopefully she will grow past and learn from...
It is interesting to note that many farm folks are not phased when putting down an animial, for food or whatever, simply by virtue of thier upbringing and experience. Troubling comparision, workers in retirement homes and psyc treatment facilities, as well as law enforcement workers, laugh and talk and joke with each other just as workers doing other things, sometimes even in the midst of what we would think of as blindingly upsetting circumstances and events. Just a thought.
