1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you

Every pet owner should have this posted in a prominent place in their home. I have seen this before and think wonderful - I am going to put one up here, too. Thanks.

My Dog
" He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears
that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out
into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his
reason for being; by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he
thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt
when I leave without taking him. (I think it makes him sick with worry
when he is not along to care for me.)
When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he
clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I
am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am
only another man. With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself.
He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret
comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where
before I was ignorant.
His head on my knee can heal my human hurts. His presence by my side
is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has
promised to wait for me... whenever... wherever — in case I need him.
And I expect I will — as I always have. He is just my dog. "
