Please don't keep found dogs!!

TUCUMCARI, N.M — A Maltese dog named Caesar who disappeared more than a year ago after a car crash that killed two members of his human family in eastern New Mexico is on his way home to Michigan.

The Quay County Sun reported Wednesday that Caesar was found by a volunteer looking for adoptable dogs at a shelter in Tucumcari. She was able to track down his owner, Monica Benson, after Caesar was scanned for a microchip.

Benson, who lost her husband and a daughter in the accident, said her four surviving children are very excited and have made "welcome home" posters for Caesar.

"This has been the best news we have received in a year," she said.

Caesar left Tucumcari this week for Clio, Mich.

The Benson family was traveling westbound on Interstate 40 near Tucumcari on June 15, 2010, when their 2001 Chevrolet minivan overturned.

Gary and Emily Benson died from injuries in the accident. One of the other children, then-18-month-old Benjamin, was placed in an intensive care unit.

"While Benjamin was in the ICU, we placed picture of him and Caesar on the walls," Monica Benson told the newspaper.

Benson said the family returned to the accident and tried to find Caesar.

"It has been so hard," Monica Benson said. "There are pictures all over the house, and Benjamin would point at them and ask, 'Where's Caesar?'"

Mike Martinez, animal control supervisor for Tucumcari, said a family dropped off Caesar on Thursday, saying they were moving and could no longer care for him.

Christina Flemming, a member of the Tucumcari Animal Rescue Group, found Caesar at the Tucumcari animal shelter on Friday.

After his chip was scanned, she said she called the number attached to the chip to find it had been disconnected. But she told the newspaper something didn't seem right, so she went online to try and find the family and found an article about the accident.

"I found the obituary and contacted the funeral home in Michigan," Flemming said. "A woman named Rhonda helped me to get in contact with Caesar's owners."

Found after 7 years!!!

I have some rescue people who don't agree with me on this subject but lately all the cases of dogs being found after year or years missing only proves my point more DO NOT KEEP FOUND DOGS!

A women in Arkansas found a young Shih Tzu, 7 years ago. She kept the dog without turning it into the the authorities or having it scanned for a micro chip. The dog got out of the women's yard and was picked up by animal control who scanned the dog and found the chip leading back to the original owner from 7 years ago! The original owner wants his dog back and the women who found the dog is upset.

The only thing I feel bad for is the dog. The poor dog has lived with the same person/family for 7 years and is now being up rooted. But at the same time if I were in the shoes of the people who lost the dog 7 years ago, I sure the hell would want my dog back.

I don't understand why people keep dogs they find. Frustrates me to no end!

STOP KEEPING FOUND DOGS

I get so frustrated with people. I understand that dog pounds are EVIL but they are a necessary evil. If someone looses there dog that is the first place they should check and check every day until their dog if found. So in turn if you find a dog TAKE IT TO THE POUND!

By Federal all all pounds have to keep a stray dog with no tags for 3 open business days. That means you find the dog Saturday... Saturday and Sunday do not count as a business day and if they pound is closed on Monday then that day doesn't count either so that means Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday do count. That give someone almost a week before their dog can be euthanized or sold. And if the owner REALLY cared they would be calling the pound non stop looking for their dog. AND if you are so freaking worried about this dog that you found being put to sleep then go there on the 3rd day and adopt it.

I am just a little pissed off because a girl I grew up with called me looking for her JRT. She is 9 years old and spayed very much loved and taken care of but dogs will be dogs and she ran off. She searched for the dog and was told by a worker at the local town grocery store that two women picked up a dog matching that description in the parking lot and said they were going to take it to the shelter. Well poor girl checked the dog pound and NOPE checked every shelter she could think of and NOPE! I am so pissed. I guarantee you that either so rescue took in the dog and is going to place it up for adoption or one of the two ladies just decided to keep it.

IT IS SOMEONE'S DOG! FOR GOD SAKE! UGH!!!

Shit happens, dogs run off, just because it ran off doesn't mean someone doesn't love it.

Same bull shit happened last year... a family beagle that they had gotten the week before escaped from their fence. They searched and searched for the dog. A women found it and decided because it wasn't fixed that the people weren't good owners and she wasn't going to give it back. OMG! Well if the lady wouldn't be such a B she would have learned that their was already an appointment for the dog to be fixed but they only had it a week so it wasn't fixed yet.

UGH!! This is what gives rescue a bad name.

So freaking frustrated.
