What is a dog hoarder everyone keeps asking me..... Well a dog hoarder is someone that collects dogs. Some people collect butterfly pictures, some people collect Christmas stuff, a dog hoarder collects DOGS!!
And yes I know of one.
There is a women who has 5 dogs living in her house and 6 dogs living outside. At least that I know of. And this is after I took 4 dogs from her last year and placed them all in homes. I did take the other dogs and get them spayed / neutered BUT at the time I was doing this there was a mom with puppies. Living outside, chained to the dog house. I wasn't able to take the mom to get fixed because she was still nursing the puppies.
The puppies all ended up dieing... freezing to death. When the mom was finally ready to get spayed a month or so had passed and MY FAULT! I never followed up to get her fixed. Well I am an asshole because guess what?????
Mom dog has 6 puppies. Oh and mom is a black lab... like we need more of them.
Anyways, the dog hoarder's son called me asking for help to get the mom fixed. HOW THE HELL DID I FORGET TO GO BACK AND GET THE MOM!! UGH!! I am an idiot.
He also tells me that the mom has 6 puppies and they are keeping them all. I was like NO YOUR NOT!! That is stupid. WHY? After about 2 weeks of going back and forth with him I have them talked into letting me get the mom fixed as long as I give her back and taking 5 puppies. They want to keep the only female puppy.
Do you want to know why they want to keep the female puppy??? So, that they can hook her up the dog house with her mom! OMG!!!!!! Are you freaking kidding me? They want to take a 3 month old puppy and make it live outside.
Now here is the kicker... I HAVE A FREAKING HOME FOR IT!! So, I offered her $100 to give me the female puppy. I haven't heard back yet. I don't know what else to do.
So, Tonight night I am getting all 6 puppies and the mom. I am getting the mom fixed and all the puppies their shots. The puppies will then go into rescue who I am pretty sure will have homes for them within a week. She has people waiting for black lab puppies.
I have to give the mom back. I know it sucks she lives outside but she hasn't known anything else and they want her back. They feed her and water her but living outside just sucks. Poor dogs.
I am really hoping me offering her $100 for the female puppy does not bite me in the ass..... she is going to want money for all of them or something like that. Let's hope not. I really hope I can convenience her to give me the puppy.
I don't know what else to do. UGH!
Dog rescue is a sad and dark place but as a rescuer regardless of all the horrible things you see... the abuse, the neglect, the death, the ones you can't help, the mean and cruel people... you deal with it for the dogs. You put on a happy face and you deal. This blog is to help one dog rescuer deal and hopefully show other rescuers they are not alone, even though it feels like that most of the time.

LETTERS TO A DOG.......
January 6
Dear Dog,
I saw you today for the first time, just a couple houses from my own. The school bus stopped to let out your kids, and your mom opened the front door to let you run out and greet them. You are a wiggly, bouncy and happy little puppy with a full belly and a shiny coat. Your kids grabbed you up, hugged you, held you and toted you inside. Your tail was wagging the entire time. I thought to my self, how sweet, what a way to end a long hard day. I spoke to your mom this evening and she said that they got you from the Animal Shelter, and the kids named you Lucky.
March 10
Dear Lucky,
I saw you today as I always do on my way home from work. You were already outside to greet the kids today, which seemed a little odd. The little girl got off the bus and shooed you away; she appeared to not want you jumping on her. The boy got off the bus and gave you a quick playful pat on the head, then smelled his hand and brushed you aside. You looked confused and sad, as you went to lie by the porch. You curled up in a tight ball on the cold ground and let out a huge sigh. My heart felt heavy that day.
March 21
Dear Lucky,
I saw you today. I was headed home, and the kids got off the bus, walked to the house, and you ran out as far as you could on your heavy chain to let them know you were there. The little girl ignored you, the little boy told you to be quiet, when you barked for his attention. My neighbor commented that they needed to do something with your barking because you keep them up at night. You had a bucket of water and a bowl of food, a relatively nice doghouse, but your eyes were sad and empty. I shook my head and let out a huge sigh.
April 30
Dear Lucky,
I worried for you today. You look thin, your chain heavy on your neck, your coat is dirty and falling out, you don't get up to do much anymore. Your bucket is turned over, and I have not seen your food bowl for a few days now. I spoke to the neighbor and asked about you. He said you still bark at night and he saw the man of the house throw something at you the other day as he scolded you. I shook my head in despair as I went back into my house.
June 4
Dear Lucky,
My heart sank today. I was headed home, and you weren't in your yard. A large part of me hoped you got away, another large part of me was frightened at all the other possibilities. I asked my neighbor about you, and he said your family went on vacation and sent you back to the Animal Shelter. I shook my head and cried for you as I went into my house.
June 5
Dear Dog,
I went to the shelter today. I found you huddled in the back of a cage that had a bucket, a bowl of food, and a blanket for you to lie on. You looked up at me as if you knew me, and my heart broke as I read your card. They did not even care enough to give them your name, and the card simply said, "male, neutered, Poodle. Owners did not want." I cried when a gentleman from the kennel said, "That's a sad one there. He came from here, you know, last Christmas. Guess they just got tired of him. He's too frightened, no one will adopt him." I went to the counter and told them I would be back tomorrow and please don't do anything just yet. They all kind of nodded like they heard that one before.
June 6
Dear Dog,
I brought you home today. You were scared and untrusting, but a small part of you somewhere allowed you to wag the tip of your tail when I told you that you were a good boy and that I loved you. I gave you a new name, "Happy", because you aren't and I hope that someday you will be. You had an accident on the floor, and when I came back to clean it up with paper towel you slunk down and whimpered as if the hand was coming for you. I tried to choke back the tears when I thought of what you must have gone through in the past six months. I reached out and patted you and your eyes closed and your body went limp at such a gentle gesture. "We're going to be all right," I told you. I showed you your food, and you ate voraciously, and you marveled at the treats and toys I got for you.
December 25
Dear Happy,
Good morning my best friend! You woke me, as always, popping out from under the covers on your side of the bed, licking my face to tell me it was time for our walk. We went through the living room and you sniffed what Santa left for us. I hugged you and said, "Last year you were a Christmas gift, now this year, these are all yours!" Your coat is shiny, your belly always full, and even though we found out at your first vet visit you had heart worms, you are healthy now. As we went out for our walk, we saw your old family in the front yard. They look at you each time as if they recognize you in a way, but you don't give them a second glance.
--- Then I believe both our hearts stopped as we saw the children emerge from the yard holding a small playful puppy. "Isn't she just precious? We got her from the animal shelter. Hope this one works out, the other dog we got from there was so much trouble." I sighed and refrained from pointing out that you were not the trouble. You looked up at me as if to say, "Thank you, mom." I kneeled down and whispered in your sweet ear, "No, it is I who thank you."

Broken Pelvis
Today was fun. I picked up the puggle puppies from the clinic after getting fixed and took them into work. YAY!!! PUPPIES AT WORK THE BEST EVER!!!
Bob K. is coming at 6pm to pick them up and drive them to Gloria... I am not looking forward to the mess in the morning from the puppies.

So, hopefully they will end up on a card soon :-)
Wolfie was adopted tonight and the other 6 are going back to Gloria's and they will pretty much be in homes before the end of the day tomorrow!! I have the feed room in my barn covered in news paper with the heater blasting and a big pillow and blanket all laid out for them. I am going to have a mess to clean up in the morning.. LOL!!
Bob K. is coming at 6pm to pick them up and drive them to Gloria... I am not looking forward to the mess in the morning from the puppies.
Gloria and I keep saying how do people do it, breed dogs that is? UGH!! SO MUCH WORK! but then I guess they probably don't really care about them and don't worry about them being clean, happy and healthy.
So, today is also transport day! I got a male JRT, I named him Crash. He was hit by a car and has a broken Pelvis. I feel so sorry for him.
I am not sure of the exact story but he was at the Scioto County Pound. A women felt sorry for him... can you blame her? And paid for him to get checked out by a vet.
The pound said it will heal on it's own but yikes! I am going to call my vet office tomorrow to get him in for X-rays. I just worry that he needs a pin or surgery or something. Poor guy.
They said to leave him on crate rest... not like he can really walk anyways. I did talk to my vet today and they said to just get him out twice a day for potty and make sure he is sleeping somewhere soft and warm. They said it would be about 5 weeks before it would be healed enough for him to be "normal"
I set him up in the office in the garage. I have two heater going in there for him and have him piled with blankets

Where did the week go?
WOW I have been busy, sad thing is I feel like I haven't gotten anything done. LOL!! Don't you hate that?
Well so for some good news. Tuesday was fun having Carlton at work. Tuesday night my fiance, Tyler was at my house working on stuff... we are remodeling my house... that is a whole different topic for a blog..LOL!! Anyways, when he left to go home he left his dog at my house and took Carlton. LOL!! Then I received text message that night and then next morning about things Carlton was doing. It was pretty funny.
Wednesday I received a message from my friend June that she had someone looking for a lap dog. I mentioned Carlton. That evening April came over and meet Carlton. I am sure at first she was a little taken back because he is rough looking around the edges but really that isn't his fault. She took him home to "foster to adopt" him. Needless to say I have received emails both yesterday and today about how much they LOVE that dog... LOL!!
Seriously though who wouldn't?? Happy Ending YAY!!
Then last night I received the best application ever!! With some of my dogs I get pictures of the ideal home for the dog and I wish and wish to find a home like the one I created in my head.. does that make sense? Well I saw this application and was so excited! It was an application for Munch. Mom, Dad, 3 kids (2 are boys), another male JRT and a fenced in yard. I mean really couldn't be more perfect!! So, Munch is leaving tomorrow for a foster to adopt!! YAY!!
Then last night a family I have been speaking with about getting dog decided they are coming 3 hours from Michigan to come meet and hopefully adopt Muppet. YAY!!! I am so excited about that because I was getting depressed that he was living at my house. I want puppies to grow up in a home not in foster care.
Ricky who I got back on Monday after being adopted for nearly 8 months.... is going to Debbie's for a trial. Debbie adopted Ed about this time last year. She is a great home and lives very similar to the way the women who gave up Ricky lives so that should be an easy transition for him.
The lady that fostered Sassy for me about a month ago said she wanted to adopt Sassy so I am excited about that. We will get all the details worked out for next week. Sassy needs a special home because she is deaf... granted I think she is a good enough dog that she can go to anyone but not everyone wants a practically deaf dog. :-(
I am waiting on the adoption fee to be mailed for Barney who is now named Jack.. LOL!! So, that will be an official adoption here really soon.
AND Jenny, the mom of the puppies is getting adopted on Sunday! AND the puppies should all have homes by Saturday.
Holy cow.. busy week.
Of course I save a few this week too.. LOL!! Kate my foster home in Columbus just went and picked up a cutie named Scooter. He is the product of someone dieing and asking a family member to take the dog who really didn't want the dog :-( So, we have him!

I am also getting a dog named Quinn... he was supposed to die today but we saved him :-)

And next Thursday with any luck I will be getting a dog with a broken pelvis. He was hit by a car.

Dog at work
Today I brought Carlton into work. It is pretty funny, he is just sitting on a chair in my office hanging out. I am going to a local high school, Magnificat to do a presentation about dog rescue so Carlton in my prop :-)
Carlton is one of the ones I picked up at the beginning of November on my dog rescue run where I hit up three pounds and rescued..... I think 6 or 7 dogs... LOL!! I can't remember how many in total. I took three home with me...Carlton, Dottie and Barney. I think I am going to have to go back to my own post to remember how many dogs I picked up that day... LOL!!
Anyways, Carlton is the one that was badly abused. His owners kicked in his front teeth so the poor little guy doesn't have teeth in the front. Besides looking a little rough you would never know he was abused... he is just so sweet. He actually lives in my house full time.
So, he has been hanging out on my office chair all day. Pretty much just sleeping. I guy named Paul walked into my office and was talking to me. He didn't even see Carlton in the chair. Paul is a big guy and when Carlton woke up I think it scared him b/c he barked... it was SOOO FUNNY!! I am sure my Executive Director didn't appreciate it though... he isn't a fan of dogs, let alone dogs in the office but he tolerates my craziness.. LOL!!
Here is a picture of Carlton sitting in my office... and YES that is an Ohio State Jacket that he wore in this morning.. I didn't want him to be cold
